Embark on a thrilling journey with us as a REXUS/BEXUS intern! If you are a student brimming with enthusiasm and ready to contribute to launching a stratospheric balloon alongside a team of experts, we have an incredible opportunity tailored just for you. We are on the lookout for individuals with a self-motivated spirit, outstanding communication skills, and a keen desire to gain hands-on experience within a space company, we have an exciting opportunity for you. Join us in this exciting venture, and let your aspirations take flight!
The REXUS/BEXUS programme allows students from universities and higher education colleges across Europe to carry out scientific and technological experiments on research rockets and balloons. Each year, two rockets and two balloons are launched, carrying up to 20 experiments designed and built by student teams. REXUS experiments are launched on a rocket carrying student experiment modules to an altitude of approximately 90 km. BEXUS experiments are lifted by a stratospheric balloon up to a maximum altitude of 30 km for flight duration of 2-5 hours. REXUS and BEXUS are launched by SSC from Esrange, in Kiruna (Sweden).
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
In your role as an intern on the REXUS/BEXUS program, you will contribute to the advancement of the BEXUS mission by finalizing the design and implementation of a new balloon data acquisition unit. This unit is integral to the program as it ensures the successful environmental and visual documentation on every balloon mission. The video system serves to document both the balloon and gondola, capturing images and video footage in a time-lapse sequence.
The system will also engage in the collection of crucial atmospheric data. This encompasses measurements of various atmospheric conditions, such as pressure, temperature, and humidity in near-vacuum environments. Additionally, the system will be required to have the ability to recording infrared radiation emitted from beneath the balloon which is essential for studies of the balloon dynamics.
To optimize the efficiency and functionality of these systems, it is essential to work with low-power equipment. You will explore and potentially utilize self-powered solutions including solar power to ensure the sustainable operation of these critical components throughout the mission.
This main goal of development will start with a good understanding of the required capabilities and constraints for the final system solutions (technical, operational, and financial). As a bonus, you will be able to support the BEXUS campaign scheduled for September/October 2024. Thus, you will work with the REXUS/BEXUS programme manager supporting the campaign preparation at Esrange with the goal of launching your work on this campaign.
