Our history

For over 50 years, SSC has been a driving force in the evolution of Space technology. From its early beginnings to its current global presence, SSC has played a central role in shaping advancements across Space research, telecommunications, Earth observation, meteorology, and navigation. Today, SSC is recognized as a trusted and sought-after partner, with operations spanning the globe and a legacy of excellence in space services.

Rocket launch at Kronogård

1961
The sounding rocket activity in Sweden started in 1961. In the beginning the launches took place from Kronogård, which originally was a hunting post for royal foresters and hunters. The launch site was very primitive.

Esrange construction

1964
ESRO (European Space Research Organisation), which later became ESA (European Space Agency), decided to expand the sounding rocketry. The construction of the Esrange Space Center started in 1964.

First Esrange rocket launch

1966
After completion of Esrange, the sounding rocket activity in Kronogård stopped. The very first sounding rocket from Esrange was launched on November 20, 1966.

SSC takes ownership

1972
SSC (then "Rymdbolaget") was founded and took ownership of Esrange Space Center.

Stratospheric balloons

1974
The first high altitude balloon was launched from Esrange Space Center in 1974. Photo: Pirog balloon project in 1985.

Microgravity research

1977
First microgravity experiment payload flown on a sounding rocket.

Maser launch

1987
First launch within the MASER sounding rocket program.

MAXUS launch

1991
First launch of MAXUS, the largest sounding rocket in Europe.

Universal Space Network

2000
Aquired USN (Universal Space Network) in the US and started the establishment of SSC's global ground station network.

LSE Space

2004
SSC acquires German company LSE Space, which is the start of Spacecraft Operations and Engineering Services. Photo: ESA

Santiago Satellite Station

2008
Acquired Santiago Ground Station (founded 1958).

Canada Satellite Station

2009
Established Inuvik Ground Station in Canada.

Aurora Technology

2010
Acquired Dutch engineering company Aurora Technology (founded 1995).

International brand

2011
A new international brand was launched. SSC, a leading global provider of advanced space services.

Testbeds

2020

Spaceport Esrange

2023

Satellite launch agreements

2024
Signed collaborative agreements with Firefly Aerospace and Perigee to jointly launch satellites from Esrange.

Themis

2025
Europe's reusable rocket demonstrator arrives to Esrange, developed under ESA’s Future Launchers Preparatory Programme (FLPP).

SSC Space

2026
A new name and brand identity for the entire group and all subsidiaries, reflecting our global presence and business focus.
