STERN is a German programme for students with the aim to develop, build and launch their own rockets.

The student teams have three years’ time to develop their rocket that flies higher than 5km (16400ft) and get the opportunity to launch their rocket from (SSC) Esrange Space Center, Sweden

The STERN (STudentische Experimental-RaketeN) programme of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) is a space-related project carried out and documented by students of different universities in Germany. The complete documentation of the project named Leonis is provided within the STERN Project Documentation (SPD) and shall serve as an invaluable reference document not only for all current and future participants in this project but also for external experts evaluating the development, e.g. during project reviews. The program is financed by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).
